Tamar Korat reaches out to those at RISK and ABUSED in Isaan. Working together with them, sharing the transforming love of Jesus, helping practical needs and building self-value. Since July 2010 Tamar Korat has been involved in reaching out to those at risk and abused in the schools and streets of Korat and the outlying villages in Isaan. We believe in the transformation of individuals and communities through the love of Jesus.
Tamar Korat is a ministry of Project L.I.F.E. Thailand and partners with Youth with a Mission Thailand.
The story of Isaan
Isaan, the North-East of Thailand is by far the poorest region of Thailand. Isaan has a population of about 22 million people and most of them work in agriculture. The people live off their land, mostly from their rice fields. Rice farming is very hard physical work and it is not a very stable source of income. Many people have debts, which leads to most young men leaving the countryside to look for work in the cities to have more financial stability.
Many girls marry or get pregnant young, and often the marriage falls apart and they are left as sole caretakers of their children and aging parents. They are faced with a heavy financial responsibility and with very little education and work experience, there are not many options for them. Many of them leave for the bigger cities and end up in places like Pattaya, with the hope to marry a foreign husband that will provide for them and their family..
With the parents away in the cities in search of happiness, money or a better future, the kids often stay with their grandparents in the villages. Broken families, alcohol abuse and mistreatment of kids are problems that we face a lot in the villages.
How do we make a difference?
Tamar Korat aims to be there for the families, especially vulnerable women and children, showing them that there is a God of love. We want to encourage them, make them feel loved and valuable and support them in their needs. Our goal is to transform Isaan with the love of God and raise up confident followers of Jesus.
